Naples Velo Community

"Our mission is to build a community that promotes cycling at all skill levels"

WE Must Respect What We Expect - STOP at ALL Stop Signs!

If we EXPECT MOTORISTS to respect our rights as cyclists and to drive lawfully, WE TOO must RESPECT ALL rules of the road ... and in particular, respecting ALL STOP SIGNS and red lights.

All cycling groups and individual riders are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to obey all rules of the road and STOP fully at ALL stop signs.  Let's demonstrate OUR respect for the law and OUR respect for motorists and pedestrians.

WE must RESPECT what we EXPECT others to respect.

It is incumbent that we be role models for obeying the rules of the road. Let's strongly encourage others to do the same. Let's call out those who fail to demonstrate respect for the law and the rules of the road -- POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE combined with role-modeling CAN and WILL create a WAVE OF CHANGE.

STOPPING is the right thing to do.

STOPPING at stop signs is the safe thing to do.

STOPPING demonstrates our very VISIBLE RESPECT for the law.

STOPPING and starting makes you stronger and adds a positive element to our rides (let's simply CHANGE the way we see it and DO IT).

Every legal STOP we make shows our SUPPORT for those who have been VICTIM to the unlawful acts of motorists on our roadways.

Every legal STOP we make is a visible VOTE in support of the initiatives we have underway with the City, County and State to make cycling on our roadways SAFER for ALL OF US.

STOPPING at stop signs IS THE LAW.  So ... until it's changed, let's obey it.

Thank you for your support from all of us who have suffered the consequences of motorists who have NOT obeyed the rules of the road.

Great question. Position has generally been to treat the group as one vehicle. Getting clarity from the Police Chief is a great idea. A strict reading of the applicable statute seems to require individual stops, but we've been told by police officials in the past that most officers would likely treat the group as one.

AGREE 100%! A question: what is velo's position on whether or not the group may proceed through a stop sign as one vehicle after the one on the front makes a stop? Can we get with Chief Wechsler and try to have an understanding on this? This was a topic of discussion today after the lowdermilk ride.
